VP5R+GVH Dalwhinnie, 2023

Digital C-type print.

The artist seeks to portray the Scottish landscape in terms of pure colour, but without the mimetic assumptions usually attached to the photographic image. Made near Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands shortly before the emergence of Spring growth, the image rejects photographic realism in favour of visual abstraction. The image title is the Plus Code used to identify the geographic location where the original image was made.

Using a rules-based approach and made without human intervention (or Photoshop), the pixels of the original digital image have been rearranged programmatically to obscure visual detail but to retain and highlight the landscape's natural colour palette.

The resulting image is a painterly meditation on colour, landscape and place.
